CNN on China/DC sniper execution/war/Fort Hood shooting

Newswoman: Why is China so economically powerful?
Man1: They're efficient communists.
Newswoman: And what will bring about their downfall?
Man2: Corruption.
Newswoman: Is that so?
Man1: I don't see that happening.

I dunno, man... All I see/hear about American politics are thousands of people, each with their own opinion, getting little to nothing accomplished because they're too stubborn to admit when their opinion is no good. People with good ideas can't get a word in edgewise, because they're automatically on the same level as screaming idiots. It's a democracy. Gotta be fair.

Meanwhile, we have China. Frighteningly efficient world superpower. Not so great in terms of people's rights, from what I hear, but hey. I guess no one's perfect. I was intrigueded at what I heard about their. A government-run think tank of the most brilliant minds in the country, coming up with the best ideas and having those ideas directly implemented by people in power. Pretty efficient. Don't agree with the latest and greatest idea? That's fine for you. You're free to disagree. You're also free to kindly fuck off. Mm, communism. So harsh. So tasty.
Hey, you can only argue so much with their system. Yeah they might not have the friendliest work ethic over there (severe understatement?). But they also apparently have a very low unemployment rate, especially for a population that gigantic.

Every country's got its problems. It's not the system that's at fault usually, but the people who run it. Despite its problems, China is becoming more powerful.

Can't we marry efficiency with compassion? Can't we find a happy middle, and do away with all the greed and corruption? I hope so.

---

Regarding the execution of John Muhammad, the DC sniper of 2002... I am by no means happy that he was killed. I do feel some sense of reassurance and relief, though. While I believe that this was the best course of action, there were other choices that could have been made. It would have been possible to lock him away in isolation for the rest of his life. Some plea in favor of his rehabilitation. But to attempt to change someone who has already killed ten people is a waste of time and resources. It is better for justice to be done, and for us to work proactively in the future in order to prevent these types of individuals from committing murders.
Ten people were murdered. This fact will remain, whether their killer had mental issues or not. This fact will remain, whether their killer had children whom he loved or not. Killing an innocent person is unacceptable. However...to kill someone- by executing them in an act of justice, after carefully and thoroughly deeming that they are truly guilty, because they killed someone else... I don't believe that I could bring myself to lend too much support to this being wrong.
Of course it could be endlessly argued. But from one standpoint, it is punishment for a wrongful act. Someone commits a wrongful act. They are found guilty because of clear, thorough, and factual evidence. To say that they have changed since they performed the act, or to accept an apology from them does not pardon them from justice.
However...I realize that we also use punishment as a means to reprimand people, to incite change in them. To make them learn. To dissuade them from repeating the wrongful act that they committed.
I have a lot more thinking to do about this....

And now that I think about this, it saddens me once again to consider the innocent deaths that occur in war. Many more than just ten innocent people have died in these recent wars. We become numb to death that does not occur near us. We become numb to an unannounced death toll. Victims cease to become people, and transform simply into numbers in our minds. Death becomes trivialized.
A person can fervently oppose war and the death penalty......but I believe that this is practically useless. Death is a part of life, and killing is an embedded part of human nature. It is better to work towards solutions that are at least justified. Executing a killer who has been clearly proven guilty by thorough and factual evidence is controversial, but not unjustifiable. Waging war against murderous extremists is controversial, but not unjustifiable. Of course it is not always that simple. People have their ulterior motives. Few things are clear-cut and honest. But death should never be trivialized. It has always and will always occur, but murder should never be celebrated.

Under new leadership, we can hope that this war will be fought as honestly, efficiently, and quickly as possible. This is the best that I can ask for.

The DC sniper was executed peacefully. Some of the family of his victims have forgiven him. His children stated their own sorrow, and their hearts also went out to the families of the victims. That is more than I could have asked for.

---

Concerning the Fort Hood shooting: It's relieving to know that Nidal Hasan, the shooter, was unlikely to have been involved with Islamic jihadists. Of course, that would be absurd to consider in the first place. He was a member of the U.S. military, after all. If he had any connection to extremists, he wouldn't have been allowed to enlist.
What WAS discovered, however, was that he was extremely isolated, had very few friends, could not find a wife, frequented a strip club, and was under a great deal of stress. In addition, he was a psychiatrist who had been interacting with U.S. soldiers dealing with PTSD. This was a middle-aged man going through a terrible crisis. He had no one to confide in, and snapped. Unfortunately, he took it out on his co-workers.
What angers me is that Islamic radicalists here in the U.S. are fervently supporting and celebrating the shootings.

I cannot relay how furious this makes me.

As I stated before, I believe that murder should never be celebrated. Whether it's a soldier being gunned down, a serial killer being executed, or even Osama Bin Laden himself being put to death, murder should never ever be celebrated.
A religious ceremony for someone dying naturally and passing on to the next life is one thing. A victory party after winning a war, even.
But literally and publicly praising the very murder of a human is disgusting.
Apparently, the radicalists are holding their proclamations directly outside of an Islamic mosque in New York City. The peaceful moslems praying within the mosque want NOTHING to do with them, of course. It is deeply saddening, then, to realize that the actions of the radicals will only stir the flames of ignorance and blind hatred in America and overseas.

They are breeding hatred, with every intent and purpose of breeding hatred. What's more is that they specifically say that they are doing this in the name of their religion as dictated by the Qur'an, their holy book. This is no different than a Catholic who uses the bible as an excuse to drive their own hateful agendas.

Freedom of speech must be respected, though. This is a tragic abuse of the first amendment.

I wish that we could also legally recognize 'Freedom to kick the ever-living SHIT out of people who are being fucking assholes.'
Pondering

I've recently been concerned with the state of humanity. I know that this is extremely vague, but I don't feel comfortable with specifics right now. There are some things that I've been afraid of. Lately, it's transfigured into more of a helpless sadness- a realization that there are some things which I am powerless to change. Anger at certain things I see..

Please don't take it personally.

I can't blame anyone for their course. Rather, anger is inspired when I see certain people or things.. anger or sadness or both, because I am reminded of why things have come to be this way. At least, from my thoughts and recollections and theories. Because of the careless, greedy, and debilitating actions of certain people and groups in power today and from generations ago...

Yeah. Way to go, me. Anyway, I was encouraged by a Tarot reading to post this.

...If I told you to do something...something that would involve you giving up something you really wanted in order to secure a pleasant and stable future for our children, would you do it?

Would you trust me, even if it was more of a hope than a guarantee?

I don't think I will.....I don't know if it would be right of me to. So, I won't. For now, anyway. There is still so much more than I need to consider and to learn. I'm constantly afraid that I am merely being selfish and delusional.

I just hope I don't live to regret it. Ever have that happen? You keep your mouth shut about something, afraid of stepping on someone's toes, and then you regret it later?

I guess...perhaps it doesn't even matter. People will find their happiness, one way or another.

Hmm. I'll be satisfied with that, for now.

This little gem of horror (I scare myself when I look at it, anyway) came from a juxtaposition exercise in digital video editing class. Basically we were to show a picture of a reaction, then a picture of what is being reacted to, then show the reaction again. Alfred Hitchcock explains this 'Kuleshov Effect'.

Anyways, you can probably imagine what I was reacting to.

I wasn't acutely aware that times are changing and that women are beginning to earn more than men in the workplace, and hold more jobs. Should I care? Should I in some way respond to this with actions now that you have informed me?

No.

I'll keep doing my job. They'll keep doing theirs. If a woman can land a decent-paying job that they are qualified for, just as I have, then that's fair and fine. If I start slacking off, it's my ass. If I want to keep up, I'd better keep studying and learning and working hard. If a woman or another man wishes to advance, holding that person back does not truly help me advance at all. Rather, I would be staying in one place and preventing another individual from realizing their true potential.

My issue with CNN's report about this is that they are presenting this as if it were a war between men and women.

It isn't.

And it should never be.

((As an added note, after hearing some further commentary from guest speakers on the show, I wish that people would stop trivializing the life of a housewife. A woman who willingly keeps a house and responsibly raises children with love and discipline is infinitely more valuable than any C.E.O., and works twice as hard. She also does so for free. There is no money. No greed. No petty competition or corruption. Cultivating the future of a new life is no small task.))

I hear crickets in the distance.

I guess I've wasted enough breath for one post.

(Be certain what that APR is -- many banks have been stealthily raising those rates in the recent months.) When you find that card, call the number on the back of the card...
...and close out that account. Turn off the card. Quit that bank. Chop the card into several tiny pieces.

Be sure to tell the customer representative on the phone why you are closing the account -- if they forget to ask.

No doubt, you'll have a balance yet to pay, and possibly some left-over fees. And to top it off, you won't have that credit card as an option the next time you find you'd like to spend more money than you currently have. Deal with it. You will be far better off if you pay the balance down and learn to live with less credit in the long-run.

SPREAD THE WORD
This message won't be heard unless those banks see a significant drop in their customer base due to their high APR practices. Credit card company satisfaction rates are at their lowest ever, and they still have not stopped raising their rates. A mass exodus may be the only way left for consumers to regain control over the banks. Support the new initiative on reform measures in Congress, and call your representative to show your support -- but don't wait for Obama to try to reign in the credit card companies.

Robotic Parking Garage in Portland, Oregon

http://blog.oregonlive.com/commuting/2009/08/portlands_new_commuting_toy_ro.html

RESPECT.

This is something that is very interesting to me. Ever since I started driving, I have dreaded parking garages. They're crowded, hard to navigate, and generally more stressful than they're worth. I believe this new technology could bring a lot of relief. For one thing, it would force people not to park like a FUCKTARD (taking up two spaces, crooked, etc).

Please to be building one in Washington D.C. thank you.

Words meme

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

These words were from Nicole:

1. KITTIES - HELL YES KITTIES. I love kitties. I know a few. They're pretty cool. In fact, I'd like to own one again someday. I might name it Razputin.

2. PENUMBRA - Holy crap that game. It scared the pants off of me. And then I had to put my pants back on so that I could crap my pants. I wanna go home and play it some more :(

3. ARDOR - See 'Destroyer of'

4. WEBCAM - Yay D: I don't use mine often enough. It's cool for taking weird pictures to edit later, and also for talking to my friends :)

5. HATS - I dig hats. I own one or two. They're pretty handy for blocking out the sun when you want to take a nap, or just looking cool.

Strange/funny/awesome/embarrassing dream

So I had a dream last night. I was walking around the city, apparently near the beach. I guess I was on vacation or something. With me was a buddy of mine. We were trying to find some place to eat, and it was about 5am. So we walked into a restaurant and started looking for somewhere to sit.

And who do I see?

The K-con gang!

That's right. Sitting at a table to my left, smiling at me. It was unbelievable! I ran up to them and we started talking about this and that and about how amazing it was that we all met here by complete chance. Turns out one of them had leased a condo in the area. So we all head back to the condo and I guess we were going to get ready to head to the beach or something because

Suddenly.

I had.

No pants.

And suddenly, NO ONE ELSE HAD PANTS EITHER. I was RUNNING AROUND this place, trying to find PANTS and trying to find A PLACE TO PUT ON THE PANTS WHERE NO ONE ELSE WAS and I kept running from room to room, but I'd inevitably find myself in a room with one of the girls in her underwear and I'd be like "AAAUGH SORRY" and I'd run to another room. Repeat this about five times, and then finally I found an empty room and put my pants on.

I...I don't even know. I hope this doesn't come true. OR DO I? DAMN IT FREUD, SOMETIMES AN INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSLE IS JUST AN INTERCONTINENTAL BALLISTIC MISSILE. *stomps off*

*stomps back* Oh plus, recently I had a dream about a street being decorated by Silent Hill environments, and Liz was walking around as James. It was cool. *stomps away again*
